The Promise of Economic Security for Our Mothers

By admin in Uncategorized

As we all know Windows 7 Key, there is no harder, or more rewarding job Windows 7 serial key, than being a Mom. But for so many mothers who work outside of the home, it’s made even harder by the lack of equal pay for women in our country.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women only make 77 cents on the dollar compared to what men make. For women who are mothers, that pay gap is compounded by what is commonly referred to as the “Motherhood Penalty,” which amounts to approximately 5% per child on average.

To illustrate how wide this gap is, Catalyst compared the median income of a working single mother ($24,487) with that of a working single father ($36,290) and found working single moms make just 67 cents on the dollar compared with their male equivalents.

This is a particular problem as more and more women with children are joining the workforce and are contributing significant portions of their household incomes. As Catalyst reports, as of 2010, 70.8% of women with children under the age of 18 worked outside of the home and 39% of working mothers are primary breadwinners. In New York alone, women head more than 1 million households (15 million nationally) and it’s estimated that because of the wage gap, New York families are deprived of $8,600 a year, or as much as $10,784 nationwide.The National Partnership For Women And Families estimates this could purchase 2,751 gallons of gas, 13 months of rent, or food for 1.8 years.

As I wrote on Equal Pay Day last month, the gender wage gap is not just about inequity, it’s about economic security, and not just for women, but for their families as well. So, for working mothers, the lack of economic security means putting less food on the table, it means feeding their children less healthy food, and it means having less access to quality health care for their children.

As a mother myself, I know that nothing means more to moms than the health and well-being of their children and I can’t think of a better Mother’s Day gift for American moms than the promise of economic security for their families. One important step we must take is to close the gender wage gap.

In 2009, President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes it easier for victims of wage discrimination to pursue compensatory damages. That was a good start, but now, I’m pleased that Senator Reid intends to bring The Paycheck Fairness Act up for another vote. This important piece of legislation would amend the Equal Pay Act of 1963 to provide more protections for women in the workplace and punish companies that discriminate against women. Republicans blocked this legislation before and appear poised to filibuster it again.

So, to all mothers this Mother’s Day, I urge you to make your voices heard. Talk about this issue with your friends. Call, write and tweet your senators to support The Paycheck Fairness Act. Post this blog post to Facebook, sign our petition, and share them with your friends. Also, make sure that you and all your friends are registered to vote in the November elections and make sure that you support candidates that have your best interests at heart. And when it comes time to vote, remember Office Visio Key, it’s not just about the Presidential or Congressional elections. Use your voice on the local level where it has the potential to be more widely heard. And, of course, if you feel you can make a difference, run for office yourself.

We must overcome GOP opposition to closing the gender wage gap and together I know we can, not only for all working women, but on behalf of our children whose health and well-being depend on it.

A Compact Copenhagen Guide Book Recommendations F

By admin in Uncategorized

For the third year running replica watches, an international panel has just named Copenhagen’s Noma the best restaurant in the world. I find it hard to take the panel’s list as seriously as all that, but I can certainly say that our one meal at Noma a few years ago was terrific. And the more you read about the place — and its chef/co-owner René Redzepi — the more you are impressed by the focus, skill and imagination at work in that converted warehouse on the wrong side of the river.

So, if one of Noma’s chefs told me the name of her favorite Copenhagen eating place, I would put it on my list.

At the end of 2011, Noma and the excellent travel search/information site Momondo.com (also based in Copenhagen and well worth exploring) assembled a nicely designed little guide book to the city based on just that sort of recommendation: In “Copenhagen from Noma & Momondo,” 40-odd members of the Noma team — chefs, waiters, a dishwasher, sommeliers, Mr. Redzepi himself — name their favorites.

Favorite what? Restaurant, bar, nightclub, street replica watches, park, cemetery, etc. There’s a photo and biography of each Noma-ite — an international crew if ever there was one, which adds to the individuality of the listings — a quotation about the place he or she has recommended and all the usual practical information. The entries are organized by neighborhood, and there’s a brief introduction to each area.

I said this was a little book. It is little in that it is pocket-sized, and also in that it makes no attempt to be comprehensive. To my mind, this is a plus: As I know from my own vacation planning, too much information only makes your head hurt, especially if you are looking to spend only a few days in a city. Okay, Slotskælderen hos Gitte Kik (enthusiastically recommended by one Noma waiter) may or may not serve the best open sandwiches in Copenhagen, but I’ve never heard a bad word about it — and how many options do you need if you’re going to be in town for five days? In any event, the book’s editors have supplemented the recommendations with additional listings — not overwhelming in number, but as many as I’d need. Everything is keyed to a clear fold-out map (and to area maps in each section).

What’s missing is basic travel information: lodging, museums and the costlier sort of restaurants (such as Noma). This is easy to get from any number of printed or online sources replica watches, and you’ll need to refer to these; the sometimes quirky and always enthusiastic advice in “Copenhagen from Noma & Momondo” is harder to come by.

Sadly, the book itself is not easy to get hold of: Stores in Denmark carry it, but, at least for the moment, most travelers will need to order it from the United Kingdom version of Amazon.com.

Do You Believe Obama Actually Changed His Mind Abo

Did Barack Obama "evolve" on gay marriage or has he always been for it? Tattoo Stencil Machine

Saul Loeb/AFP/GettyImages

President Obama is no more hypocritical than the next politician—especially if the next one is Mitt Romney—but he certainly is a hypocrite. So while I’m thrilled to celebrate his support for gay marriage, as little as it means legally, I’m irked by his all-too-eloquent conversion story.

In his interview with ABC News, the president recounted a change of heart on gay marriage. He said his thinking had evolved “over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors.” He talked of having observed members of his own staff “in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together.” He referenced conversations with his wife, who agrees with him. And of course he invoked the troops: “those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained Best Tattoo Inks, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage.”

Do you believe that—through exposure to these people—the president has actually changed his mind on gay marriage? I don’t. He has always supported it.

Advertisement

Everything about his history—his progressive politics, his civil rights activism, his own heritage—strongly indicates that he would favor gay marriage. Oh, and then there is the fact that he said he supported gay marriage, unequivocally. In 1996, as a state senate candidate, Obama wrote and signed a survey declaring: “I favor legalizing same sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” When he ran for president, Obama denied support for gay marriage while endorsing civil unions, and circulated an obviously bushwah story disavowing the 1996 survey, claiming someone else had filled it out. (No matter that Obama signed it.) Liberal Democrats accepted his cover story—and his obvious hypocrisy—because they knew that supporting gay marriage would have been politically fatal to his 2008 prospects. Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more.

There is no elegant way to own up to past hypocrisy. But perhaps we shouldn’t spend too much time congratulating the president on his “evolution.” When he decided to pursue higher office Tattoo power supplies, he made the wrong decision on gay marriage for political convenience. Now, he is making the right decision on gay marriage, and also for political convenience. He has known that gay marriage was right for at least 16 years—a lot longer than most Americans, including me. Let’s not praise him too much for finally speaking out about it today.

Road, bridge projects will improve Midcoast transp

By admin in Uncategorized

Brian Swartz | BDNThis fall, the Maine Department of Transportation will reconstruct the drainage system along Main Street in Stockton Springs. The project will involve rebuilding or replacing existing catch basins.Brian Swartz | BDNIn Rockland, the Maine Department of Transportation will spend $119,000 and $138,000 to install new traffic lights at the intersection of Park Street (Route 1) and Broadway (Route 1A). The project will improve traffic flows at this key intersection.

From Stockton Springs to Lower Penobscot Bay, construction projects slated to take place this summer will improve an airport, bridges, and roads.

Motorists will soon encounter a major construction project in Stockton Springs, where a contractor will replace the Church Street overpass across Route 1. According to MDOT Project Manager Stephen Bodge, the existing 126-foot bridge was built in 1957.

“It’s got some pretty severe cracking and spalling of the concrete, where the concrete deteriorates to the point where it starts to fall off,” Bodge said, explaining why the MDOT will replace the bridge. “Most of that is on the substructure units, the piers and abutments.

“The deck is in poor condition as well,” he said.

The MDOT regularly inspects the bridge; with the spalling, “we don’t want to take any chances over roadways,” Bodge said, referring to concrete possibly falling onto the highway.

“That’s why we replacing it,” he said.

Project bids were opened on March 21. The apparent low bid of $1,221,997.75 was submitted by the Lane Construction Corp. of Cheshire, Conn. “It’s a good price. Our original estimates were higher than that,” Bodge said.

As for the construction timeline, “we’ve been talking about a mid-May [start] date,” he said.

The existing bridge has three spans: one apiece extending from each abutment to the nearest pier and the third extending between the piers. “We’re going to replace that with a single-span bridge” undergirded by five steel beams, Bodge said.

Currently “the two piers are on the edges of the road,” he said. The new bridge Tattoo Steel Machines, which “will be quite a bit shorter” at 83 feet in length, “will have two abutments on the edge of the road.

“We’re going to use MSE abutments, Mechanically Stabilized Earth abutments,” Bodge said. Each abutment will be formed from compacted gravel, and “the outside of that will be faced with concrete panels,” he explained the MSE concept.

“We’re going to use gravel and [geotextile] fabric in the abutments. As the gravel stacks up, it will be compacted,” Bodge said.

The construction project will not affect Route 1 traffic “except for two times when we take down the existing bridge over the road and we place the new beams over it,” Bodge said. The project schedules “two overnight closures for a total of five nights,” with traffic being diverted onto Main Street in Stockton Springs, he indicated.

The contract calls for Church Street to reopen by Oct. 21 and for the project to be completed — including landscaping and paving — by Nov. 21. “We fully expect them [the contractor] to be ahead of that schedule,” Bodge said.

Two other Stockton Springs projects may ramp up as the overpass project winds down next fall. According to MDOT Project Manager Sean Smith, these projects involve highway safety improvements and Safe Routes to School bicycle/pedestrian improvements.

“Those two [projects] are hand in hand,” he said.

The highway safety-improvements project involves repairing or replacing catch basins and a closed drainage system along Main and Church streets. Plans originally called for the project to extend 0.67 miles from the Main Street-Route 1 intersection near Just Barb’s to the Cape Jellison Road.

Costs have since reconfigured the project so that it stops at the Stockton Springs Town Office, “which is just short of the Cape Jellison Road,” Smith said.

The Main Street drainage system has received “some minor repairs” in the past, and drains running beneath the street “are in relatively good shape,” he said. “It’s the drainage along the sides [of the street] and the catch basins that are in terrible shape. We will replace the entire drainage system on the [sidewalk] side” of Main Street.

The Safe Routes to School project involves rebuilding the sidewalk along Main Street and along Church Street as far as the Route 1 overpass project. “The old sidewalk is in various stages of disrepair,” Smith noted.

“These projects will go out to bid later this fall. We’d like to see some of the drainage work done this year prior to snowfall. Then we would finish everything up next year,” he said.

Smith is also the project manager for a road project that starts at the intersection of Routes 105-220 in Washington and extends 0.13 mile north to Old Union Road.

“There’s an old drainage system there currently,” Smith said. “It needs to be replaced. The metal is starting to show its age.”

Although the existing drainage system “is functioning … before too long it will start to cause us problems,” he said. “About eight years ago, our maintenance folks did some minor maintenance.”

“When you come into the Village of Washington by the post office, there’s a monument in the middle. We’re starting there and working back down to the [Medomak] river,” Smith said. Currently estimated to cost between $64,400 and $75,200 Tattoo Guns For Sale, the project will go out to bid soon, possibly in May, and “we expect to be done this summer in its entirety,” he noted.

The MDOT has scheduled several paving projects in interior Knox and Waldo counties. “We’re working from Augusta to Jefferson [for 12.58 miles] on Route 17, and we’ve got a project from Unity to Dixmont on Route 202,” Smith said. “We’re working on a Searsmont-to-Belmont Route 3 project.”

According to Smith, the MDOT will “shim” some road stretches with “a leveling course,” while “in some areas we may grind the road up and pave another 4 or 5 inches of new mix over the existing base.

“A lot of what we do now is preventative maintenance Tools Tattoo, trying to get rid of the wheel ruts and add some structure to the highway,” he explained. “If we don’t try to pave and try to get the water off the road, it’s going to continue to deteriorate.”

Other light paving projects currently in the planning or bidding stages include:

• Route 73 in Saint George and South Thomaston;

• Route 141 in Monroe and Swanville;

• Route 173 in Lincolnville;

• Route 215 in Jefferson;

• Route 220 from Route 1 in Waldoboro to Friendship Village;

• The North Palermo Road in Palermo and Freedom;

• The River Road in Cushing;

In Rockland, the MDOT plans to build new pilings and floats and install electrical pedestals at the Rockland Public Landing, which is popular with summer boaters. The project’s estimated cost is $94,200 to $110,000.

The MDOT also plans to install new traffic lights at the intersection of Park Street (Route 1) and Broadway (Route 1A) in Rockland. The project will cost between $119,000 and $138,000.

Out on Penobscot Bay, the MDOT has scheduled a resurfacing project at the airport on Matinicus Island. The project’s estimated cost range is between $163,300 and $190,000.

And on North Haven, the MDOT plans to replace a bridge that crosses Pulpit Harbor Cove on North Haven. The bridge provides a key connection between the North Shore Road and the Middle Road.

This project has been estimated to cost about $500,000.

Obama Pays Tribute To Fallen Police Officers

By admin in Uncategorized

President Obama today honored police officers who died in the line of duty and their families, saying the nation is “forever in your debt.

“Every American who wears the badge knows the burdens that come with it — the long hours and the stress; the knowledge that just about any moment could be a matter of life or death. You carry these burdens so the rest of us don’t have to,” the president told an audience of thousands gathered outside the Capitol Building for the annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.

“The rest of us can never fully understand what you go through. But please know that we hold you in our hearts — not just today, but always. We are forever in your debt. And it is on behalf of all of us, the entire American people, that I offer my thoughts, my prayers, and my thanks,” Obama said.

The president paid tribute to three officers who sacrificed their lives to save others: Detective John Falcone of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Deputy Bryan Gross of Douglas, Wyo.; and Deputy Sheriff Suzanne Hopper of Clark County, Ohio.

“Our country’s law enforcement officers use force when they have to. They are well armed and they are well trained. But they never forget that theirs is a mission of peace,” the president said. “Their job is to keep the peace, to allow all of us to enjoy peace in our neighborhoods and for our families. And today Replica Bandage dresses, with heavy hearts, we honor those who gave their lives in the service of that mission. Their families are in our thoughts and prayers Replica Missoni Dresses, as we remember the quiet courage of the men and women we have lost.”

Following his brief speech, the president spent over half an hour meeting with the families of the fallen. Today marked the second time the president has addressed the event.

Animal Farm

Newsweek, May 18 An article traces the history of the new strain of swine flu and finds that the cramped quarters of modern pig farms enable the virus to mutate more rapidly than ever. “This virus has been evolving for a long time, no doubt aided in its transformation by the ecology of industrial-scale pig farming in North America.” As more of the developing world begins to eat a meat-rich diet, the prevalence of pigs could create a pandemic more deadly than the Spanish influenza of 1918. … A reporter follows a Wal-Mart manager around a store in Denver, noting that the aisles can serve as economic indicators. “Wal-Mart managers are often the first people to sense a recession is coming because they’ll notice an increase in items discarded near cash registers.” Wal-Mart’s sales are up now, but some worry that they will tank when the economy rebounds and high-end consumers return to their usual haunts.

New Republic, May 20 A dispatch from Beirut, Lebanon, casts a wary eye on Hezbollah, speculating about the group’s parliamentary fortunes in the June elections. Regardless of whether Hezbollah wins or loses Tattoo Supplies, Tehran’s influence is waxing in Lebanon, and it will only grow across the Middle East if Iran goes nuclear. Ordinary Lebanese people “inhabit a world that has been torn into pieces, and is now being handed to a gang of bearded medievalists, backed by the bright promise of an Iranian nuclear bomb.”… Jeffrey Rosen faults Obama for trying to “split the difference” on torture by allowing prosecution of the lawyers who penned the memos but not the officials who commissioned them. Prosecuting government lawyers is both difficult and dangerous: “When lawyers are threatened with prosecutions for giving politically controversial opinions, witch hunts inevitably result that can deter the sharing of candid legal advice in the first place,” Rosen argues.

Weekly Standard, May 11 An article accuses the Obama administration of mishandling the Taliban’s advance in Pakistan. Soft power will not be enough to deal with the problem, the author argues, especially as the Islamists build safe havens inside Pakistan. “[U]nless the president and the secretary of state understand that soft power and accommodation are about as effective at countering Islamism as lollipops are at curing cancer, the march to Buner may become the symbol of the Obama presidency, played out repeatedly, from Baghdad to Basra to Beirut.”… In an editorial, William Kristol sheds no tears over the departure of Justice David Souter from the Supreme Court and Sen. Arlen Spector from the Republican Party, even though their exits make things difficult for the GOP. “[I]f the fundamental conservative task is to present alternatives to Obama’s governance, then this week’s news is not all that bad,” he writes. With Democrats “unambiguously in charge,” conservatives will be able to “clarify an alternative to Obama-ism.”

The New Yorker, May 11 Malcolm Gladwell examines how underdogs have won since David beat Goliath. The weak cannot win by playing by the rules, because the strong make the rules. “When the world has to play on Goliath’s terms, Goliath wins.” Underdogs—including T.E. Lawrence, who beat the Turks with a scrappy army of Bedouins—win when they put more effort into the fight and do the unexpected. Gladwell cites the example of a basketball team of 12-year-old girls from California who made it to the national championships because they surprised their more skilled opponents by always playing a full-court press…. What do you do if a piece of elephant dung falls off your Chris Ofili painting? You call contemporary art conservationist Christian Scheidemann, and he’ll track down another piece to replace it, according to an article on a New York-based conservation studio. The rise of artists using nontraditional materials means conservationists like Scheidemann are kept busy making “fat and felt last as long as bronze or marble.”

New York, May 11 To mark the 30th anniversary of then-6-year-old New Yorker Etan Patz’s disappearance, an article recaps the story and sheds new light on possible suspect Jose Antonio Ramos, who is serving a 20-year sentence for molesting another boy. Patz’s father sends Ramos a poster with his son’s face twice a year with a note: “What did you do to my little boy?” Two jailhouse snitches planted by an assistant district attorney almost extracted a confession from Ramos. Patz’s parents are hopeful that a new district attorney will take the case before a grand jury. … The cover story on home design takes readers inside the one-bedroom apartment of Jason Wu (the designer of Michelle Obama’s inauguration night gown), the Bowery Hotel apartment of ad man Richard Christiansen, and the Drew University dorm room of senior Maximilian Sinsteden. Sinsteden Tattoo Supplies, a budding decorator, decked out his room with Persian rugs and a chandelier to create “a space fit for Thurston Howell III.”
